After the 25th constitutional amendment, the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) constitutionally stand merged into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). The area that was lagging behind in almost all the development indicators further suffered due to militancy in the recent past. During the decade long militancy the area suffered a lot both in terms of men and material. The infrastructure got damaged and the area saw a huge mass displacement as a result of militant activities and subsequent military operations. The basic objective of the FATA merger was to plug in the political vacuum that existed in FATA since long and provide a workable and efficient legal and administrative structure to the people of the marginalized area. Achieving the desired results would, however; require huge financial and administrative commitments on part of the federal government as well as provincial governments over the period.
The merged areas/Erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) is a strip of seven tribal districts stretching from North to South along with the Pak-Afghan border. The merged area is the integral part of Pakistan and includes Tribal districts Khyber, Mohmand, Bajaur, Kurram, Orakzai, North Waziristan and South Waziristan. Additionally, the Erstwhile FATA includes six sub divisions (FR) viz a viz Peshawar, Kohat, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Tank and Dera Ismail Khan. This tangled mass constitutes an area of 27224 sq kilometers and inhabited by around 3.17 million people belonging to different tribes. The 1400 miles (2500 KM) long Durand Line, drawn in 1893 by the British colonial rulers of India, geographically divides the Pushtun tribes in the region between Afghanistan and the merged areas of Pakistan.
The nature has blessed the merged areas (erstwhile FATA) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with tremendous livestock wealth, which constitutes an important pillar of the economy. This area of the province being mostly dry hilly terrain has little land for crop production and in this situation most of its landless and small holders totally depend on livestock/Poultry production. The area has great potential for production of various species of livestock/poultry and having the following population as per 2006 livestock census:
